Anti phsopholipid antibodies- Lupus anticoagulant, anti cardiolipin antibody

What is a Lupus anticoagulant?
Lupus anticoagulant is an autoantibody associated with anti-phospholipid syndrome. The autoantibody binds to the phospholipids in the cell membrane. The interaction between the phospholipids in the cell membrane & the clotting factors is necessary for proper functioning of the clotting mechanism of the body. Lupus anticoagulant, thus interferes with the clotting mechanism & prolongs the clotting time. At the same time, it can also affect the clotting pathway in a different manner & cause abnormal clotting (Thrombosis). Lupus anticoagulant is diagnosed with the help of a blood test.
What is anti phospholipid/ anti cardiolipin antibody?
Anti phospholipid/ anti cardiolipin antibody is another autoantibody associated with anti phospholipid syndrome. This is similar to the Lupus anticoagulant & affects the coagulation mechanism in a similar manner. This can be diagnosed with a blood test.
What is the significance of these anti autoantibody associated with anti phospholipid syndrome?
These antibodies are associated with the Anti Phospholipid Syndrome. The syndrome can manifest as-
Thrombosis (clots leading to stroke/ heart attack/ gangrene/ deep vein thrombosis)
Bleeding
Tendency for repeated miscarriages.
Are there other types of Antiphospholipid antibodies?
Yes. These include-- anti-Beta2 glycoprotein antibody, anti- prothrombin antibody.
